Summer Skiing At Wooward at Copper, CO!
Posted on August 4th, 2010 Seth Morrison No commentsOver the years I have been lucky to ski in the summer at many places around the world. ”Summer camps” as we call them go on all over the world as well. Many focus on park skiing. This started for me In Whistler, BC at the now defunked “High North” camp put on by Shane Szocs where I was a coach for 5 summers. High North provided week long camp sessions, training jumps and rails on snow with a few days of afternoon water ramp and trampoline sessions. So progression was easily done with the water ramping, take your newly learned tricks to the snow the following day. Pro’s were generally the coaches.

Today Whistler and Mt Hood are still the big summer camp areas due to their long standing glacier lift serviced terrain. Last year Woodward at Copper started up and had their first summer camps. This is a new hot spot for those that want to learn more freestyle. The big thing with Woodward is the barn which consists of 4 “fly bed” tramps, 2 of which you can send it into foam pits. a gymnastics floor, a skate bowl, mini halfpipe, assorted rails and boxes. The biggest part of the barn for me is the the snow flex. 3 jump options, 2 of which are the same size and another bigger one which all send you into a large foam pit. Next to that area is a snowflex run with a box that flows into a quarter pipe, this side is where you learn to get the feel of the snow flex prior to hitting the jumps to foam pit. When jumping there is a camera on a video delay to let you see your jump. Key for progression. This past week I was a guest coach at the K2 week session. Pretty cool set up and a much more laid back scene compared to the crowded mentioned camps zones. Its great to have Woodward at Copper in Colorado, I train in the barn during the fall and you’ll see many other freestyle pros in there through out the year, besides the guest pros for the company sponsored weeks. Even the in house coaches are top notched athletes and helpful Even if you missed the summer camps, you’ll still be able to hit up the tramps and snowflex since its a year round operation. It was fun to see all the kids going for it. It showed that they were getting to work on the tramps and snowflex everyday after skiing A much more balanced training experience in my eyes.
