The past week around the Vail area was pretty fun.  Went to the X-Games for some  Oakley Promo and Powder Awards for a few days leaving with skied up and firm conditions, came back to powder conditions that built into waist deep.  Pretty amazing, we are very spoiled.  What else can be said but out doing some powder skiing with good friends.  Check out the photos and this link for a more in depth interview from ESPN  http://espn.go.com/action/freeskiing/blog?post=3877148.  It will tell some more of the story from a different view.  Some of it is accurate and some embellished.

Seeing many people out in the sidecountry without proper avalanche equipment or knowledge of where they are going.  Please get on it, have your gear and know where your going.  We do exploring but know what we are getting into in our areas.  Check out your local avalanche conditions from state provided websites everyday, its a very important tool, besides having knowledge of reading snowpack.

Seth, good point, too many people expect the backcountry to be “tracked out”. I rarely ski off piste, but I do have all of the equipment packed away some where. I’ve heard stories from Vail Ski Patrol of people w/o the proper equipment hiking out to East Vail, asking if it’s safe or not. Stupid! For all of the info you need visit avalanche.state.co.us and remember to ski with people you are comfortable skiing with, it makes a huge difference. Seth, nice photo, but I can’t see you (he he he) lucky. Keep tearing it up.

Tight pictures. For anyone else who isn’t pro, I live in Colorado Springs, CO and have gone up to Vail area for some backcountry this season. However, the real schralping, for me, was in the Sangre De Christo’s, near Monarch. Really good snow, a little closer than Vail and of course sunny blue sky’s. Also, for beginners try Berthoud Pass near Winter Park. The snow isn’t as deep but there are still fresh lines and help is like 20 minutes away.

So you’re saying around Vail has some good big mountain backcountry? I started off this year with some Berthoud Pass skiing and enjoyed that. But I’m looking for more. Where are the best spots to go?
